BMW History – BMW Car Models through the Years
BMW has been a leading manufacturer in the automobile industry for almost a century now having created some of the most beautiful cars in their time. Having first produced motorcycles, it was in 1928 when they released their first car. Since then, they have made classics after classics as we are about to show you.

BMW History – Early 19th Century
The first model car model that BMW created was the 3/15 saloon. This was also known as the Dixi 3/15 however, BMW acquired Dixi in 1928 and thus changed its name to the BMW 3/15. Following on from this, they then created the 3/15 DA-3 Wartburg which was BMW’s first roadster; a type of car that has built their reputation.

The 1940’s – 1970’s BMW Car Models
Car production was limited in the 40’s due to the World War, however that didn’t stop BMW from producing new cars. The 40’s brought the likes of 326 Sedan and Cabriolet, the 340 Sedan and the re-production of the 321 Saloon and the 327 Coupé.
The 50’s then came along and the design of BMW started to change. The Isetta, originally created in Italy, was re-designed and rebranded by BMW. The microcar first appeared in 1955.
Fast forward through the 60’s where we saw the BMW 3200 CS come into production followed by the introduction of the ‘New Class’ saloons which was presented in the form of the 1500 saloon. From there, BMW started to mould their more traditional car shapes.
The 70’s is where BMW started to push the boat out in the car industry; introducing their 3 series, 5 series, 6 series and 7 series in the space of a decade. They also increased the engine sizes of previous models, most notably the 2002 saloon engine was increased to a 1.8 litre engine and rebranded as the BMW 1802. BMW also produced their first supercar in the late 70’s: the BMW M1, specially designed for sports car racing.
1980’s – 2000’s
As we get to the 80’s, BMW had made their mark on the racing world and were looking to capitalise on their popularity with even more road cars. Launching the Z1, the first of their ‘Z’ series, as well as a handful of other commercial cars such as the E30 3 Series Sedan and the E32 7 Series. Within this decade, BMW launched the BMW M3; the most successful touring race car ever.

With technology ever advancing, BMW kept up with the latest advancements; and this didn’t change throughout the 90’s. Producing their first every SUV, a first generation M-Coupe and a first generation Compact series, they cemented their place as a leader in the car industry. Within the 90’s, BMW also purchased Rover, allowing for further resources to be used.

With the new millennium came a new branch for BMW; the Mini One and the Mini Cooper were launched. They also launch a new M3 and a new 7 Series to see them into the new year. With a new line of production and a more modern look, they pushed forward and ended up selling a million MINI’s whilst producing a new 3 Series and a new M5. Towards the latter stages of the noughties, BMW started to cater for efficiency whilst protecting the environment; their efforts were rewarded by winning the World Green Car of the Year through the 118d.
2010’s – Present Day
And all of this history brings us to today. With a lot of their more recent productions being improvements on previous models, BMW pushed the boat out once again. With the voice of climate change being heard, BMW presented their thoughts about it with a new electric car; the i8. This plug-in hybrid sports car also uses electricity as oppose to solely relying on petrol. This innovation has spurred companies such as Tesla to re-invent the car and turn to a more environmental approach.

With all of this being said, BMW are still thinking of new ideas to re-invent the automobile. With new designs, new engines and cleaner engines, they are now thinking of the future and how generations to come can still be enjoying their vehicles
